DRESS: c/o Unique Vintage BOW: ASOS

The Rose: Just what species or, shall we say, genus are you, my dear?
Alice: Well, I guess you would call me... genus, humanus... Alice.
Daisy: Ever see an alice with a blossom like that?
Orchid: Come to think of it, did you ever see an alice?
Daisy: Yes, and did you notice her petals? What a peculiar color.
Orchid: [sniffing Alice's hair] And no fragrance.
Daisy: [chuckling, as she lifts up one side of Alice's dress] And just look at those stems.

I know, I know - I keep relating my outfits back to Alice in Wonderland, but since I grew up watching the Disney version over and over, things like carefully manicured gardens and roses always lead me back to Wonderland... Standing next to this flower mural, I immediately remembered the part where the flowers turned against Alice and started making fun of her "stems"...!

Unique Vintage really has perfected the art of creating frothy, vintage inspired dresses. The dainty, sheer dotted mesh used for the sleeves and fabric overlay is just darling, and the traditional 50s fit and flare silhouette has my heart!

c/o Luna on the Moon CROP TOP: c/o Tara Starlet SHORTS: F21

In 2008, sandwiched in all the Teen Vogue's I would read cover to cover was an ad for Miss Dior Chérie that positively enchanted me - a girl wearing a pink dress and holding a huge bottle of perfume was suspended in the blue skies, held up by a bouquet of pastel balloons.

This photo has stuck with me for YEARS - so much so it was the first thing I thought of when this darling purse by Kirsty from Luna on the Moon arrived! I couldn't quite replicate this photo, but it did make me want to seek out a blue sky as a background - and it was absolute kismet when, after not being able to find any hills that would enable me to get a similar effect, I found a singular wall of a building painted blue with clouds...!

I am utterly in love with Kirsty's purses made into novelty shapes, usually with lots of glitter, aka two of my favorite things! This balloon purse is truly a testament to Kirsty's talent and eye for design, I mean just look at it, it's perfect!

As you might have noticed, along with novelty purses I'm extremely taken with crop tops. This one, by Tara Starlet, fits like a dream and is made with the most darling gingham fabric - making it a vintage lovers dream come true!

MERMAID TANK: c/o Maven Boutique LA SHORTS: c/o Motel Rocks
SHOES: c/o T.U.K. Footwear PURSE: ModCloth (old, similar)

Being associated with mermaids, which I've been obsessed with since childhood, is so exciting to me! People are always directing my attention to mermaid inspired purses, shirts, movies, art, etc - and I love it! I try to dress up as a mermaid whenever possible - and this top by Maven Boutique LA has just made it so much easier!

Available in three colors, the glittering seashells on this tank add the perfect amount of novelty and really dress up what could have been a simple shorts and tee look.

I paired it with my Motel Rocks shorts that have a beautiful sheen, cute pumps by T.U.K. shoes, and my trusty seashell purse I got from ModCloth ages ago!

Now all I need are some cute cartoon underwater creatures for sidekicks...

Dahlia

DRESS: c/o Dahlia (also available as a top) SHOES: c/o Boden SUNGLASSES ASOS
Dahlia is a brand I have loved for years now - they were one of the first brands I ever worked with because of Mermaidens (!) and each season I fall in love with their selections! This dress absolutely blew me away - the 60s is one of my very favorite decades for fashion, and the loose silhouette on this number looks absolutely stunning on - not to mention the lacey overlay, bell sleeves, and tie up ribbon details on the back...! Be still my heart.

This dress is just about to sell out (so be quick if you need it!), but it is available as a top and they have a several other darling pieces with sheer, lace, and ribbon elements in their shop! Another favorite? This 70s, high necked beauty!

I wanted the dress to shine, so I paired it simply with retro style cat eye sunglasses and these beautiful heels from Boden, who have some of the cutest shoes I've ever seen!

DRESS: c/o Unique Vintage PURSE: Pepa Loves SHOES: T.U.K. Footwear SUNGLASSES: ASOS

While taking these photos, the sun was shining and then it started raining in a beautiful misty summer rain kind of way...! It was pretty idyllic, and I love how these turned out.

Here I'm wearing a darling black and white gingham dress from Unique Vintage - there is something about summer that makes me want to always dress in gingham, and I love the detailing on the bust!

I paired it with the cutest cat bag from Pepa Loves and beautiful heels from one of my favorite brands, T.U.K. Footwear! I always say these heels remind me of a 40s-meets-70s aesthetic - I love the 40s feel of the peep toes and ankle strap, and the thickness of the ankle strap band and platform feel distinctly 70s...! (I'm kind of a dork when it comes to fashion history, so that type of thing makes me excited hehe)

I hope you are enjoying your summer!

An Interview with Margarita Mermaid

Margarita wearing her Deluxe Nereid Bra

I have been meaning to spotlight some of my favorite creatives with interviews on Mermaidens for a while now, and what better way to kick off the series then by interviewing Margarita Mermaid herself?

I've been lucky enough to collaborate with Margarita on our collection together, and I have been completely blown away by how utterly sweet and talented this girl is. It was so fun getting to getting to know her more in this interview!

Conch Seashells Top

When did you start Margarita Mermaid Swimwear?
I started doing custom swimwear in 2010 and officially launched the line in 2012.

Do you remember the first piece you designed for your line?
I think the first good one I can remember was the My Little Pony. There were definitely some before, but I think I'd rather forget about those!

Delphina Suit

Sailorita Top

Why "mermaid" and what else inspires your work?
Margarita Mermaid started just as my Instagram handle. Then I began making the Seashell Tops and people went crazy over them and it was all they wanted to buy! I was pretty happy that people responded to the idea so I decided to make the whole line inspired in mermaids.

Other things that always inspire me are certain colors and textures: metallic pastels, sparkle nude, dreamy light color tie dyes with glitter. Kids toys, dreamy bedrooms, fantasy architecture, unicorns, fairies and fortunetellers. Things from the realm of fantasy that make you feel like you are in a dreamy magical land.

Ocean Queen - Deluxe Nereid Bra

Describe your average day in the life!
Right now I'm in the design stage so my days are filled with figuring out new ideas, sourcing the fabric and trims for them, making patterns and having the samples sewn, perfecting all the details and planning the production.

I'm very excited about what we're coming up with now! When the sale stage comes, I'll spend most of the time on the website, doing promo, shipping orders, handling sales, shooting editorial and catalogue photos. Every day is different really, depending on what needs to be done!

Do you have a favorite piece you've ever made?
They're all my babies! But the new Nereid Top that we launched this summer is one I had been trying to perfect for a while and finally we nailed it - so I gotta go with that one!
